MONTRÉAL (AFP) – Tim Wellens (Lotto Soudal) beat Adam Yates (Orica-GreenEdge) in a sprint finish to win the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal on Sunday.

It was the 24-year-old’s third WorldTour victory following success in the Eneco Tour the past two years.

In terrible weather with driving rain that saw more riders drop out than finish, Wellens beat escape companion Yates, who had opened hostilities on the final ascent of the Camillien-Houde climb.

But after 205.7km and 17 laps of a street circuit around Montréal, Wellens proved the strongest with with former world champion Rui Costa (Lampre-Merida) taking third just two seconds back.

“I like these conditions, there was air. I prefer this to a heat wave,” said Wellens, who succeeded Simon Gerrans as winner.
